Lowlights from the BestBuy Dev chat with IW regarding MW2:


  • Dedicated server questions were greeted by being escorted out of the chat.
  • Max players for all versions is 9v9. Yes, I said 9v9.
  • No record feature in MW2 for PC.
  • No lean in the PC version (Mackey-IW: The game is not balanced for lean.)
  • PC Game is not yet finished*

*probably alludes to the fact that there will be future patches given reports that the PC SKU has already shipped.

  15. Ryan-IW: To samahh The experiences on both platforms are AWESOME! So there isn't a difference between the PS3 or 360 versions.
  16. bnogradi28: Can you go into more depth about the third-person mode and how you will be able to use it.
  17. Mackey-IW: 3rd person is limited to a few playlists, and it's always enabled for all players when you're in such a playlist. It's a lot of fun when you want some variety. The look is similar to spectating a game. Note that not all the attachments and perks are as useful in 3rd person.

  20. Ryan-IW: To ModernWarfare69 We get most of our ideas from real weapons being fielded right now from multiple military and other operating sources. We strive to make each weapon look and feel as they would in real life.

Mackey-IW: PC has no common provider of matchmaking like on xbox360, so to have match making on the PC we had to create IW.Net, kind of similar to the match making networks created for RTS games on PC. This was not a trivial undertaking, although it's understandable that these days consumers may take match match making for granted.

  26. Ryan-IW: To LeachKing4 In MP, a new game mode we have is Demolition. I'd have to say its one of my personal favorites as one team's objective is to detonate two targets. It gets really heavy when one target is detonated and all the focus is shifted to one target, leading to all kinds of crazy moments you'd see in only in MW2
  27. Mackey-IW: Currently the only classic map available in MW2 is Wasteland, which is based on the popular Call of Duty 1 map, Brecourt.

  29. Mackey-IW: MW2 supports games from 1v1 in Cagematch all the way up to 9v9 in the Ground War playlist.

  33. Mackey-IW: The max number of players on all platforms are 1v1 through 9v9. This is the number of players we focused on when we were balancing map size, perks, classes, challenges, etc.

  35. Ryan-IW: First of all toxicinzanity, you should'nt skip school. Trust us at IW, school is really important! In response to your question, we have a deathstreak called "painkiller" that gives you a few seconds of more health. It really helps when you're getting beat down and it gives you a fighting chance.

  41. Mackey-IW: IWNet matches players together based on several factors including ping and skill. After players are matched, the most suitable host is determined. That player hosts until they quit, at which time hosting responsibilities will normally migrate to another player without interrupting the match.

  43. Ryan-IW: Callsigns allow you to customize your MP experience with images and titles that best suit your personality.

  45. Mackey-IW: The ability to quickly and easily find a good multiplayer game. We're also able to host your rank and create-a-class online so any PC you log in with will be ready for you.

  49. Ryan-IW: If you liked "No Fighting in the War Room" and "Mile High Club", you're gonna love SpecOps. "SO" is full of timed and objective based scenarios that will give you hours and hours of gameplay. You can also play SpecOps cooperatively with a buddy so both of you can hop and pop as a team!
  50. QCskater93: Will we be able to turn off in game music? And can we mute people in the lobby in MP now?
  51. Mackey-IW: IW games have a common slider for all volume control. For muting, we now make it easy to mute players throughout the entire game (so they stay muted in the lobby).

Are you going to give admin rights to gaming rooms so that admins can Kick or Ban players who refuse to follow clan rules? For example, {MRoA} servers prohibit racial comments from guest and/or clan members...

  67. Mackey-IW: In response to the PC clan question: Private matches are a way for players to easily play with their friends and apply whatever House Rules they want. You can not kick players from Ranked matches. If language is a problem you can easily mute players.

  69. Futurefighter: Im kind of skeptical on the use of sentry guns in the MP. Can you explain them and tell us how you plan to balance them out?

  71. Vince-IW: Since we use steam for the PC version you have access to your Steam friends list.
  72. MW2Fan: Total, how long is the soundtrack in MW2?
  73. Mackey-IW: I don't know the exact minutes, but I do know that Hans Zimmer went well above and beyond the call of duty, so to speak, and really just provided an incredible amount of music. This was his first game project and he really attacked it.

  75. Vince-IW: Only snowmobiles currently, but fun!

  77. Mackey-IW: Yes, you can knife faster with the Tactical Knife (takes a long time to get though!) and you can knife a lot farther with Commando perk.

For instance, if I was level 24 and had all my classes and perks set, would they be saved online and brought back once I redownloaded? -The3rdNipple

  80. kaRMa: Regarding the PC version, will all games be hosted by players or just private matches? And will the host have a zero ping advantage?

  82. Ryan-IW: Sentry guns are basically miniguns on a tripod that react to enemy movement. They are a killstreak or you can get them in a care package. We're big on balancing weapons in MW2, especially in MP. Although a tactically placed sentry can be devastating, it can be destroyed by the other team if attacked correctly. It is very balanced and a welcome addition to the MP experience.
  83. Mackey-IW: We put a lot of work into making the game tolerant of latency. In my personal experience it is not obvious which player is host. The game plays well on broadband.

  87. Mackey-IW: Well none of the programmers are in the chat today.. so let's just say it's crazy programmer magic. It's a lot more than just K/D though. The important thing is not that all players in a game are the exact same skill, but that the teams are balanced.
  88. LeetGamer_Cobra: why are there so litle recoil in the weapons in mw, and is it the same in MW2? We have done a shooting test on most of the weapons used in MW and it is like even imposibel to hit a target with not using burst fire, and that also even with the small smg. with spraying 1 mag, it was like in 20 meters only from 1 to 2 shot that did hit and that was the 1 and 2 first bullets going out, rest was fare from hitting anything. So personaly, i feel like the weapons are mutch to easy to shoot with in MW.

  97. Ryan-IW: With balancing weapons, we strive to make sure each weapon recoils close to how it would in the real world. A good amount of us here at IW go shoot regularly and have hours of range time. The recoil we have in game is reflective to that of real steel firearms.

  110. Ryan-IW: If you're familiar with our sniper mechanics, then you'll be familiar with MW2's. We've refined our COD4 engine for MW2.

Now people can't be good at the game because they will always be killed by the noobs with triple jugger or w.e. You guys have to go back to your roots.   113. Mackey-IW: Also in response to IW_has_failedus, death streaks don't kick in until you've died several times, so you're not going to be tearing up the leaderboard with deathstreaks. They're just a great way to get out of a cold snap.

  145. Mackey-IW: The CoD4 maps were not balanced for 32vs32. In MW2 the entire experience is carefully balanced for a smaller range of players.
  146. frzg: Was the decision to create IWNet for PC a profit based decision or a 'genuine improvement of the game'?
  147. Vince-IW: To improve the game, it actually cost us money to develop it so the there isn't a profit motive.

  149. krm2014: Will the IWNET multiplayer system compensate for the undoubtly low ping that the host computer will have for the other players, or will the host have an advantage over the other players? Also, going back to clans...Is there a way to have more than 18 people in a server, because my clan has at least 100 members and we like to get 20-30 on our servers at the same time.

  151. Torinir: How does IWNet plan to address serious griefing, such as intentional teamkilling, voice/chat spamming, and other unwanted behaviours in public matchmade games? This includes organized griefing from groups like myg0t.

  154. Mackey-IW: You can easily mute players, and hardcore (friendly fire enabled ) SD has "ricochet" which makes you hurt yourself instead.
  155. Stormbringer: I can see how IW.net would be good for the individual; however, would you not agree that for clans with wide geographic dispersion this could cause severe problems in terms of ping?
  156. Vince-IW: We have not found this to be a problem.
  157. paintballrulzzz: Will there be a boot option if someone "team kills" you like in halo3? I find it really annoying trying to play a game of hard core search and destroy with out getting team killed. can you explain the kill streaks and all the new ones?
  158. Ryan-IW: We have customizable killstreaks in MW2. There are too many to list at this time, but my favorite is the AC130 in MP. Reign fire from above!
  159. Mackey-IW: Seems like everybody I play with on 360 is some guy in England that got the game early, and the game was very playable even with only 2 of 4 bars.

Why in the world would you take away dedicated servers and change the whole MP experience for us? And Mackey, the PC version with dedicated servers is already the best experience the way it is!

  203. Ryan-IW: The inspiration behind so many inclusions to MW2's MP was basically the fun factor. We'll look at something we did in the past and say "Wouldn't it be fun if we *insert blank here*". With MW2 we had the chance to do a lot of just that. We implemented things that at first were very experimental and unbalanced, but through time and hours and weeks of testing and balancing, we came out with something amazing.
