Sounds like you have something infected/corrupted - possibly your tcp/ip stack.

I'd run a complete system virus scan with the latest definitions & run Spybot + Ad-Aware too. - Also, if running windows XP - make sure you do a windows update and get all the latest security fixes & updates.

oh - and get a firewall like zonealarm so you can see what trying to get out of your machine as well as stop stuff getting in.

after i posted the first time, i ran norton, but was unable to get the latest update (would not connect) so i ran win doctor, it found 3 problems, i also ran spybot it found 6, as far as the firewall, i was using zonealarm but switch to the sp2 firewall (stupid me, never trust micro$oft) .

but what is this tcp/ip stack? and how would it act? and how can i fix it? would this affect soldner not connecting?

thanks

Geek Time: The TCP/IP (protocol) Stack is a 'suite' of networking protocols but to save me blabbering on about it here is a link to a very 'interesting' ( -_- ) site about this beast:

TCP/IP (protocol) Stack.

The socket error may indicate that it knows the site is there but it can't resolve the data, so there could be a conflict with your security settings wrt firewalls ( ?? ); The official line from Microsoft about this error is

The requested name is valid and was found in the database, but it does not have the correct associated data that it is being resolved for. The typical example for this is a host name-to-address translation attempt (using gethostbyname [Wsapiref_0q5u.asp] or WSAAsyncGetHostByName [Wsapiref_7bhu.asp]) that uses the DNS server. An MX record is returned but no A record. This indicates that the host itself exists, but it is not directly reachable.

The 'easiest' thing to do would be to system restore your machine back to a time-frame when it was known to work correctly. This may correct the registry errors.

Another method would be to 'repair' Internet explorer via the control panel add/remove programs option. This may also fix any corrupt registry keys.

Yet another would be to do an 'over-the-top' installation of your operating system. This would mean you would have to install most (if not all) of your updates again though.

As for your firewall software Zonealarm is fine as a basic form of protection but it is not as flexible and configureable as others. Remember the saying "You get what you pay for"..

If you want it, I can provide you with "Norton Internet Security 2004 Professional" as well as "Norton SystemWorks 2004 Professional". At least then you will have a decent proprietary Anti-Virus+Firewall suite along with a System Utility package to help it chug along smoothly.

As both these suites require 'product activation' to work I have compiled a concise set of instructions** to allow for this to be achieved offline along with the means to do so. You will then be free to run 'Liveupdate' and receive your updates for the next 12 months.

Here is a link to my webspace where you can download an 83MB ZIP file for:

Norton Internet Security 2004 Professional

Systemworks is around 300MB even when zipped so if you want this one please let me know - I have broken it down into 3 separate 'zips' which I will have to upload individually so as not to fill my 250MB webspace quota in one go!...

** The Instructions are contained in a folder of the same name within the zip cabinet, the file is called Instructions.doc - Please read these instructions BEFORE you attempt the installation. You are required to be completely isolated from the internet otherwise you'll just f**k the whole thing up :P ..

Of course... Just follow the instructions before you install it as you have to be totally off-line to 'activate'. I have included screen-shots in the instructions document so even a monkey can do it.. :D

Nope - File still there and dowloads fine. Have just dropped it to my desktop with no probs.

Check your IE settings are such that you can download zips and/or that SP2 security centre is not 'blocking' it as a possible problem file.
