Seems a bit like the America's Army (AA) concept. It won't be taking up any HDD space on my machine. I'm still in two minds about COD:W@W having read some horrendous reviews and the patch weighing in at over 300MB!? Does Santa take returns?

Hey Wizzy! You're still here! Same old faces eh?! ..

Hello! I made it back. I'm alive. It's been a long time since I've typed anything between these forum walls - Work and play has seen me visit sandy shores, hot climates and take lead from unfriendly locals.. Now it's time to rekindle my relationship with the fellas at TuG and hopefully get a bit of server time in before I have to head south-of-the-border for some school work. Looking forward to getting my hands on CoD5:W@W and slotting a few gooks with you all. Regards, Tantalus.

1.23 Beta Update
Tantalus replied to .TuG.Beaver's topic in Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (GR:AW)
Having completed the education system many years ago and subsequently further and higher education etc etc, I feel I am in a suitably qualified position to offer the following 'cutting' from a large online dictionary to the above gentlemen in full and final settlement: Opinionator: O*pin"ion*a`tor\, n. An opinionated person; one given to conjecture. -

Tantalus replied to .TuG.Beaver's topic in Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (GR:AW)
An opinion is "What seems to one to be probably true" , a 'Judgement' or an 'estimation'. What you expressed above is hardly an opinion because there was no base subject matter on which to differentiate; it was merely a rather misguided belief, or maybe some form of animalistic desire .. Yes, I hold with my statement that an opinion cannot be wrong because in the eyes of the opinionator they are 'the one' that holds it to be true. Other opinions may differ dependant on the one that holds them. I'm sure I never actually said it was 'silly' to play games. What I said was at present I am spending more time out and about on my motorbike. Sure as eggs-is-eggs when it starts to get horrible on the weather front I'll be back indoors on the PC. * Anyway we seem to be heading away from the main topic of this thread * Which is the 1.23 Beta Update * Download it from the link at the start of the Thread * -
1.23 Beta Update
Tantalus replied to .TuG.Beaver's topic in Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (GR:AW)
I'm not - I've just bought a brand new ?9.5K 'Sports Roadster' motorcycle on a 56 plate and I'm busy adding some miles, scrubbing in the tyres and reducing the width of the 'chicken strips'... With a 1700cc monster machine sitting in the garage who wants to stay in and play games!? -

I can't be wrong because what was expressed was an opinion. A person's opinion cannot be wrong because it is their personal belief; what it can be though is different - and it's just mine (wrt the above post) differs from yours. For instance I believe that it is not truly as playable as GR1 given the broad spectrum of online competitions that were common-place with GR1; such as the 'Stealth Recon' series and 'Azzcup' to name but a few. The prizes for the SR series were quite remarkable and drew corporate sponsorship. I have yet to see a corporate sponsored GRAW competition, but I can only hope that it improves enough to obtain some. I really wanted this game to be a winner off-the-bat, it's just a pity it wasn't. With any luck the released patches and future support will bring the crowds back to a deserving game - A game which I have been competing in since the beginning and started playing many years ago with the guys from the then AC][d Clan, to (just before I joined TuG) my top three position in Azzcup. Bring back the good times.. -
1.23 Beta Update
Tantalus replied to .TuG.Beaver's topic in Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (GR:AW)
Too little, too late. I mean C'mon, not even the 'Unknown Ghosts' here play it anymore and we used to be a solid GR fanbase! Haven't we seen the same thing with 'Soldner' and the other 999 games that were meant to be the 'dogs' but just turned out to be the 'bollox' part. Software is money and profit full stop. Hype it up till everyone is frothing at the mouth and if it turns out to be a bit of a lemon after a couple of million people have paid out 20-30 quid who's laughing? Not us that's for sure. I suppose you could be naive enough to believe that if you stopped buying their games for a while then we would all be happy ever after.. For sure, Microsoft is really crapping it's 'Operating System' pants with the likes of Apple or Linux on their tail - Oh ... no .. it isn't actually is it? Because we are all reading this on a 'Bill Gates Clone PC' aren't we.. Discuss: (Tant releases his moggy towards a large group of 'Rats with Wings' and awaits the outcome - giggles) -
Then it looks like we are under some sort of 'attack' .... run for the hills children.. don't look back.. the threads have gone forever..

Looks like the database has been restored to an earlier time before the posts were made.. Maybe there was a problem and we have not been notified by the 'admins' ??

I bought it online when the game was advertising it - I like the nippy little choppers, you can do some good damage with them: Some bugger even took my A10 out with one because he had the advantage of superior manoeuvrability..
-
Okay. NP. I'm sure I'll find somewhere else to play

Is the TuG COD2 server running? I've just tried connecting direct to the IP via my modified shortcut but it just sits and times out.. This is at the IP advertised 193.93.46.63:28960

and it ain't even Christmas yet! Played a bit on Multiplayer, what a feed of Shite.. Run Gun and try to shoot randomly spawning AI, there doesn't seem to be any logic behind some of their spawning - It's like the first variant when someone would spawn behind you having cleared a room No More. We waited this long for our supposedly superb follow-up tactical shooter only for someone to hand us a steaming turd instead. Someone in UbiSoft needs F*****g shooting that's for sure.

Thoughts on the game?
Tantalus replied to SAF_Kaiser's topic in Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (GR:AW)
Have set up my router to forward the relevant ports. Result = Same. Set up zonealarm to allow all for GRAW.exe = Same result. Dropped firewall etc = Successful Connection. So... created port list for entire UDP & TCP ports required by GRAW within 'Zonealarm Internet Security Suite' under the 'Internet Zone' ... Result ... Connection !! Pity the game throws you out after each game in MP though.. what a buggy game! Is anyone else's game really rather 'BROWN' ??? I can't say that there appear to be a great deal of colours going on ... it's almost like 'sepia' ... -

I cannot connect to any of the servers that show up in the browser list. I can refresh, update etc, but when i select 'join' I just get a click and nothing happens.. Looks like I wont be playing after all.. -

A massively over-engineered feed of poop! WTF have they done to GR!? It's meant to be a game, they have been so busy making it look real-world that it has lost the edge it used to have.. and to top it all off, with all this new fangled graphics, I can barely manage to play it for more than 10 minutes without that awful 'motion sickness' feeling setting in. Brand New and now back in it's box - I feel an Ebay moment coming on -

New (5th) PC ..
Tantalus replied to Tantalus's topic in Computers / Consoles / Mobile Phones / Gadgets
I can only assume that the melted graphics card occurred in some spotty youths machine who was attempting to gain that extra frame on Doom3 or claw that extra point on 3DMark - I honestly don't see it happening in the wife's office, no matter how fast she types .. For the money, component for component, I could not make one cheaper and given the included software package, 36 month warranty, free call-out service and on-site repairs it is an ideal 'out-of-the-box' solution. I'm one of the first to normally say "Baah, make it yourself, it's cheaper and you get better components", but in this case the components themselves are not as budget as you would expect. The BTX case could have been swapped for an ATX one to allow for the expansion that the motherboard caters for, but I honestly can't see the missus worrying about installing another 3 SATA drives so that she can configure RAID . Here is a breakdown of the components: Mainboard: MSI MS-7204 with the Intel 945P chipset. PCIE Graphics: MSI OEM GeForce 6700XL (MSI MS-V035 with MS-4073 feature board). Note: 6700XL is based on 6600GT and clocked at around 525Mhz. HDD = Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 250Gb SATA-II 8MB cache. The DVD +/- R/W D/L Lightscribe = Sony DWQ31A. The DVD ROM = Sony DDU1615. RAM = 2 sticks of Swissbit (spectek) 512MB DDR2 PC-4300-4-4-4 @ 533MHz. M/Bd has 1 PCI-E 16x, 1 PCI-E 1x (unused) and 2 PCI slots (1 unused). Reviews for this re-release have so far been quite good: PCPLUS Magazine WhatPC? Magazine Picture below shows fitted with optional 250GB external HDD in the units hot-swap bay.. Oh.. and if it gets me more sex then it's gotta be worth it!! -
Bought a new PC yesterday on a pure whim: was passing ALDI's of all places and saw them advertised - good looking spec, so I bought one.. Have a look at this: Intel Pentium D Dual Core CPU 830 at 3.0 GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz FSB. Includes Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition SP2. Extreme Low Noise BTX case, Heat-Pipe Coolers and quiet fans. 1024 MB DDR2 SDRAM 533 MHz 64 Bit dual channel memory. 250GB SATA 8MB cache 7200rpm HDD. x3 Dual TV tuners installed: 2x DVB-S digital satellite. 2x DVB-T digital TV. 2x analogue TV/ cable TV. PCIE x16 NVIDIA® GeForceT 6700 XL 128MB 525Mhz GDDR3 GPU. Sony 16x Dual Layer (Litescribe) Multi-standard DVD/CD burner. 16x DVD-ROM. Wireless LAN @ 54Mbit/s. Integrated 8in1 USB 2.0 card reader. 6x USB 2.0 ports. 2x FireWire (IEEE 1394). 8 Intel® High Definition Audio. V.90 PCI data fax modem. 10/100 Mbit/s LAN. Also dual-boots, either into Windows XP or into a Linux based utility called PowerCinema - which acts as a media center for audio/video/slides etc etc.. Also bought one of their external 250GB HDD's. which sits in a bay on top of the case and plugs directly into the case! Cool or what! Anyway - I think the wife will love it.. and you can give it the once over yourselves here: http://www.medion.co.uk/flash/md8800/ honestly, it's not a bad machine at all - and it really is QUIET - you can't even tell it's on; which has pleased the missus coz my last build sounded like a hairdryer with all the fans I installed.. Those efficient germans seem to have done it again..

Concurr. I have mine on pre-order from simplygames.com (?23.98 delivered).. Looking forward to getting the ol' GR head back on again..

Help Buying Memory
Tantalus replied to Xtreme's topic in Computers / Consoles / Mobile Phones / Gadgets
Make sure you know that the memory you are buying is truly compatible with your motherboard. I owned an ASUS mobo which was so particular about RAM that I couldn't use the 2x512Mb dimms I had purchased. As mentioned above THE best sites to check is 'Crucial', where you can make use of their Memory Advisor (also linked above) All you have to do is select manufacturer, mobo etc and a list of Crucial compatible dimms will be displayed. They are only slightly more expensive than your local shop, but if the memory they advise does not work then you get a full refund, no questions asked - how many other places will offer that?! Even if you don't want to buy from them you can take down all the data such as CAS, voltage etc and use it to shop around. Good luck. ps. I'm also building another games machine at the moment - based around the MSI Diamond Plus, which has true x16 PCI graphics on both SLI slots (normally the second slot is way lower), I'm going to bang on an Ath64 X2 4200+ to start, 2Gb of Ram and two 256Mb 6800GS PCIE Cards just to see how the baby runs.. then make changes as required. Enjoy your build - and make sure you have an anti-static wrist band; at £3 or so they can save you an awful lot of heartache (blowing your chip). Remember! It's not that you need to be earthed as many people make the mistake of assuming, but the fact that you have to be AT THE SAME POTENTIAL as the PC you are building, so as not to create a massive potential difference across the components. Connect yourself to the metal case and you should be okay.. Here endeth the basic electronics lesson for today. -
Concurr with Dave. But I'll take a PC over a games console anyday. IMO a games console is like being provided with a garage the size of a phone box, ie., you have to hack & slash your car to fit inside and lose a great amount of the original structure in the process.. A PC on the other hand has no such limitation(s); given the same analogy if the car (game) is such that it requires a bigger, better garage (PC), then it is easy to just build an extension (improve graphics card aso) than to build a whole new garage (PC). ...aaaand sleep....
