Tantalus
After spending 23 hours out of the last 36 driving a 7.5 tonne truck from Dunfermline to Portsmouth, loading the contents of a house and driving back, getting a phone call half way up the M6 saying my wife was in hospital under observation for a 'heart flutter', getting stuck in traffic on the M74 due to an overturned caravan and Range-Rover, getting home feeding the dogs, visiting my wife and eventually getting to bed in the early hours this morning - I still did it ... even though I had a BMW driver try his hardest to run me down during my U-turn and mad pedestrians throwing themselves into the road in front of me and wearing non-breathable black cordura on a day which could have melted sand .. I passed my Part II (DAS) Motorcycle Test on a Honda CBF500 with only '1 Minor' on the balance sheet (for a swan-neck on a right hand bend which I knew I had approached too fast) having not ridden a motorbike in 20+ years until last week! All that remains to be done is to buy a bike; bearing in mind insurance, reliability and the fact that I cover 146 miles a day to work and back, I'm almost set on getting myself a 'brand-spankers' 600cc version of the CBF, complete with ABS. Watch out Scotland here I come ...

Secondly, Flya & Tant - you big wusssies! If you want a Honda - get a VTR 1000 If you are going to travel Tant - go for a mega-trailie or a BMW RT series ... Trust me on this - travelled many miles on a saddle and you don't want a sore arse and/or stuffed up back! Big twins rule!
Tantalus
Thank you Bundu for your informative and educational reply.. Given your profound independant advice am I to believe that you may be getting some sort of 'back-hander' from insurance companies?! Checking certain brokers on the internet, the size of bike to which you refer would have me paying almost ?1k per annum for insurance!! Add that to my CSA payments, 3 cars, two horses, two dogs, loans and mortgage and you end up with a rather large "Get tae f**k ya derft prek" or so I've been told by my wife ..besides, I'm far too old and far too interested in my own well-being to jump on such a hog given my current riding experience - and if you had to ride the muddy cow-dung infested back roads of Scotland that I have to travel daily then you'd forgive me my indulgence; in the ten years I have driven the roads there has not been one single month when there hasn't been an upturned car somewhere enroute and I don't intend anyone passing my shiny leather-clad ass sticking out from a ditch on some foggy scottish morning at half-past five! Quoted post LOL Here beginith the sermon: Honda CBR 600 RR Suzuki DL 1000 V-Strom Big twin trailies are cheaper to buy, cheaper to insure, better to ride long distances, arguably safer to ride and unarguably much more versatile and fun! SB_Missie
Well done .TuG.Tantalus, But after driving long distance like you do, week in week out, why the hell do u want to ride a bike with all the nutters on the road that u see each day when driving, I?m sorry but you?re a braver person than me... But don?t worry when I drive past that ditch and see them little legs waving in the air at 8:00pm when I drive past I will pull you out... On a more serious note.... Have u looked up the bike clubs on the net they normally show you where to get the good deals from the insurances.. Missie
